WCA statement on “crane climbing” video

There has been recent media coverage of an online video showing someone climbing a construction crane in downtown Winnipeg.

We shouldn’t have to say it, but this activity is just plain dumb.

Construction sites present many potential hazards. This is why contractors obtain COR safety certification, put their staff through COR training, document safety procedures, require personal protective equipment for all site visitors, and erect fences and signage.

Breaking into construction sites and climbing cranes or structures is dangerous to climbers, and puts the general public at risk as well. It’s also illegal, and the WCA supports criminal charges being filed against anyone taking part in this activity.

While we think the opening parkour chase in Casino Royale is amazing, stunts like that should be left to trained professionals operating in a controlled setting. No one should risk their life for 15 seconds of online fame.
