CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY COMES TOGETHER TO HOST ONE-DAY EXPO SHOWCASING REWARDING CAREERS
(WINNIPEG, MB, WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 2015) A week from today, more than 1,700 high school students from across Manitoba will converge at Red River Exhibition Place for the 7th annual Manitoba Construction Career Expo.
Hosted by the Winnipeg Construction Association (WCA), this one-day event allows students to try a variety of trades – from welding, painting, roofing, to piping. More than 30 exhibitors will be on site showcasing their trade, through education and hands-on activities.
With recent industry reports of a looming skilled labour shortage, the industry has pooled its resources to educate the next generation of Manitobans on what it means to work in the construction industry today.
“We want the next generation of construction professionals to be Manitobans, and what better way than to educate high school students on this rewarding career path,” says Ron Hambley, President, WCA. “Most people have the common perception that to work in construction, all you need is a set of hammer and nails, but it’s much more than that. Our industry has opportunities for anyone who is into math or science, or for anyone else who likes to build with their hands.”
