BUILDING CODE: Mezzanines and Interconnected Floor Spaces

This half day session provides participants with a basic understanding of the application of Subsection 3.2.8. Mezzanines and Openings through Floor Assemblies of the 2015 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) to buildings regulated by Part 3 of the Code.

The mezzanine and interconnected floor space requirements of the NBCC can have a major impact on the construction requirements applicable to new construction and to existing buildings. Many buildings owners fulfill a need for extra storage or office space by constructing a mezzanine floor or interconnected floor space. If this is done without first acquiring the required building permit, there can be major problems trying to achieve Code compliance after the fact.

Designers and constructors alike must be aware of the requirements applicable to mezzanines and interconnected floor spaces in order to advise owners of the implications that construction of these building features can have on the overall building design.

Software (included) Each participant will be provided with the following software:

  • Software for the application of Subsection 3.2.2. Building Size and Construction Relative to Occupancy of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC). This software will allow the user to view the construction requirements of Subsection 3.2.2. from the 2015 NBC and editions dating back to 1975.

Dr. John Frye

Dr. Frye spent twenty-six years with the City of Winnipeg Building Inspections Depart­ment, retiring in September, 2000. Dr. Frye held several senior positions in the Building Inspection Department, including Manager of the Plan Examination Branch and Assis­tant to the Manager of Building Inspections.

During his career with the City of Winnipeg, Dr. Frye served on numerous provincial, National and International professional committees related to building codes and stan­dards. Dr. Frye continues to serve on a number of these committees. In 1992 he re­ceived an Adjunct Professor appointment from the University of Manitoba Department of Civil Engineering. In 2000, he became an Engineer-In-Residence and continues to teach in the Department of Civil Engineering.

Dr. Frye has published papers related to the application of expert systems for the fire protection requirements of the National Building Code of Canada. He has lectured ex­tensively to architects, professional engineers, interior designers and building technolo­gists on building codes particularly in the area of fire protection.

 

Geoff Mikolayenko, Senior Building Plan Examiner, Planning, Property and Development Department City of Winnipeg

Geoff M picGeoff Mikolayenko is currently the City of Winnipeg’s Senior Building Plan Examiner. He is a Certified Engineering Technologist with a diploma in Structural Engineering Technology from Red River Community College. He has 21 years of experience within the industry.

Geoff joined the City of Winnipeg organization in 2000 as the Residential Building Plan Examiner, moving to a Commercial Part 3 Plan Examiner in 2003. In his present role as Senior Building Plan Examiner, he is responsible for the technical supervision of junior plan examiners and the examination of plans for large construction projects to ensure compliance with the Manitoba Building Code, various by-laws and regulations. In 2016, Geoff was appointed as the City of Winnipeg’s representative to the Building Standards Board.
