Mezzanines and Interconnected Floor Spaces

This half day course provides participants with a basic understanding of the application of Subsection 3.2.8. Mezzanines and Openings through Floor Assemblies of the 2010 National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) to buildings regulated by Part 3 of the Code.

The mezzanine and interconnected floor space requirements of the NBCC can have a major impact on the construction requirements applicable to new construction and to existing buildings. Many buildings owners fulfill a need for extra storage or office space by constructing a mezzanine floor or interconnected floor space. If this is done without first acquiring the required building permit, there can be major problems trying to achieve Code compliance after the fact.

Designers and constructors alike must be aware of the requirements applicable to mezzanines and interconnected floor spaces in order to advise owners of the implications that construction of these building features can have on the overall building design.
