Gold Seal Update

Gold Seal Congratulations!

Winnipeg Construction Association would like to congratulate Richard Woroniak, Bockstael Construction (1979) Ltd. for being the first individual to receive his Gold Seal Superintendent Certification on Manitoba's Gold Seal Designated Project, Red River College's Heavy Equipment Transportation Centre.

Gold Seal News

  • Time is running out to qualify for the upcoming Gold Seal Exam, scheduled for October 17. Completed applications should be submitted to WCA by September 12!

  • Citing "a tremendous increase in the scope and complexity of construction management challenges," John Schubert, CCA Gold Seal Committee Chair, announced this summer that the minimum experience level for Gold Seal certification will move to 5 years beginning January 1, 2009. "Technical knowledge, new building and management techniques, regulatory compliance and safety and environmental legislation have introduced challenges we had never heard of in the past – today’s managers are forced to be at the top of their game," said Schubert. Applications received before January 1, 2009, will not be affected.
  • Since 1993, over 6,500 Project Managers, Superintendents, Estimators and, more recently, Construction Safety Coordinators, have been certified through Gold Seal. Aside from an early period of grandfathering, the program saw very steady certification rates of about 150 each year. In 2006, however, the certification rate doubled to 300. In 2007, it doubled again to 600. What lies behind the surge of interest in Gold Seal? The answer, for the most part, is the emergence of a corporate-level interest in management certification. In the past few months more than a dozen companies have asked all of their construction managers to become certified. In the fall of 2008 we’ll be examining some of the reasons behind this, and the benefits to large and small companies.
  • Did you know that your trades experience provides credits toward a Gold Seal certification? A construction-related trades license will assist you in advancing toward certification as a Project Manager, Superintendent or Estimator. And commencing earlier this year, experience as a heavy equipment operator qualifies for credit towards certification as a Superintendent, Roadbuilding and Heavy Construction.

For more information, please contact Kelly Thiessen, Gold Seal Administrator, Winnipeg Construction Association, at kellythiessen@wpgca.com or 775-8664 x 2225.

Online Planroom Tip of the Week: How to find closed projects in the Online Planroom

To find closed projects within the Online Planroom, locate the "STATUS" field on the Quick Search screen on the main page as well as on the "Build a Search" page. This "STATUS" field refers to the Project's current phase or status.

For this example, assume that we do not know whether this closed project is awaiting Bid Results, Cancelled or Awarded. To search from the Project Quick Search on the Main page;

  • At the bottom and to the right of the Status field the words “all / none” display; click on the word “none” to de-select all status options, then hold down the "CTRL" key on the keyboard and click on Bid Results, Awarded, Cancelled, and Closed within the Status Field.
  • Finally, it is best to add a portion of the project name or location to the Keyword field to refine the search. Or, add the number to the Project Number field if known. Doing so will filter the search results and only display projects that match the Status options selected.
