Regulation Updates to Sheet Metal Worker and Sprinkler System Installer

Sheet Metal Worker Trade - As of March 17, 2008, the Sheet Metal Worker Trade contains the following new apprenticeship eligibility and training requirements:

Apprentices - to be eligible to enter into an apprenticeship agreement, an apprentice must meet one of the following criteria:

  • must have a Canadian High School Diploma or equivalent
  • must be 16 years of age, have Grade 10 and be enrolled in the Senior Years Apprenticeship Option (SYAO)
  • if they have not completed high school and are at least 19 years old, they may apply as a mature student

Minimum Wage Rates - The wage rate is a percentage of the "reference wage rate". "Reference wage rate" is a percentage of the minimum wage rate per hour for a Sheet Metal Worker journeyperson under the CIWA Regulation Manitoba.

  • Level One: 50 per cent of the reference wage rate
  • Level Two: 65 per cent of the reference wage rate
  • Level Three: 75 per cent of the reference wage rate
  • Level Four: 85 per cent of the reference wage rate

Changes to Certification Requirements - Apprentices and trades qualifiers no longer have to take a practical exam as part of their certification process. Trades qualifiers must have been employed in the trade within the last 10 years for 1.5 times the term of apprenticeship (6 years), demonstrate knowledge of 70 per cent of the scope of the trade and successfully complete the Certification Examination.

Employers - An employer must maintain a 1:1 ratio of one certified journeyperson to one apprentice on-site, ensuring the apprentice is directly supervised by a certified journeyperson (or designated trainer).

For more information about the requirements to be a designated trainer, or for more information on the Sheet Metal Worker Trade Regulation Update, click HERE.

Sprinkler System Installer Trade - On February 6, 2008, the Government of Manitoba introduced one significant change to the Sprinkler System Installer training requirements:

Employers - An employer must maintain a 1:1 ratio of one certified journeyperson to one apprentice on-site, ensuring the apprentice is directly supervised by a certified journeyperson.

For more information on the Sprinkler System Installer Regulation Update, call the Manitoba Apprenticeship Branch at 1-877-978-7233 or click HERE.
