Regulation Updates to Sheet Metal Worker and Sprinkler System Installer
Sheet Metal Worker Trade - As of March 17, 2008, the Sheet Metal Worker Trade contains the following new apprenticeship eligibility and training requirements: Apprentices - to be eligible to enter into an apprenticeship agreement, an apprentice must meet one of the following criteria:
Minimum Wage Rates - The wage rate is a percentage of the "reference wage rate". "Reference wage rate" is a percentage of the minimum wage rate per hour for a Sheet Metal Worker journeyperson under the CIWA Regulation Manitoba.
Changes to Certification Requirements - Apprentices and trades qualifiers no longer have to take a practical exam as part of their certification process. Trades qualifiers must have been employed in the trade within the last 10 years for 1.5 times the term of apprenticeship (6 years), demonstrate knowledge of 70 per cent of the scope of the trade and successfully complete the Certification Examination. Employers - An employer must maintain a 1:1 ratio of one certified journeyperson to one apprentice on-site, ensuring the apprentice is directly supervised by a certified journeyperson (or designated trainer). Sprinkler System Installer Trade - On February 6, 2008, the Government of Manitoba introduced one significant change to the Sprinkler System Installer training requirements: Employers - An employer must maintain a 1:1 ratio of one certified journeyperson to one apprentice on-site, ensuring the apprentice is directly supervised by a certified journeyperson. Temporary Foreign Worker Web Portal The Construction Sector Council (CSC) is making it easier to find information about the Temporary Foreign Workers program with a new web portal. TempForeignWork.ca provides everything an industry member or a foreign worker needs to know about the TFW program, including an Industry Guide to assist construction managers and human resource personnel in recruiting, hiring and retaining valued workers.
