Icelandic Initiative Connects Manitoba Employers with Qualified Workers
In Spring 2009, the Honourable Nancy Allan, Minister of Labour and Immigration signed the Iceland-Manitoba Labour Cooperation Agreement. This agreement provides a process to connect Manitoba employers with qualified Icelandic workers who are interested in working in Manitoba.
How does this process work?
- First, you fill out the Employer Application Form and submit it to Manitoba Labour and Immigration. The Employer Application Form can be found HERE. The Employer Application provides Manitoba Labour and Immigration with the your position requirements.
- Next, Manitoba Labour and Immigration works with Iceland's Directorate of Labour to identify interested candidates that match the skills set you are looking for. All candidates identified by the Directorate of Labour have been pre-screened and have expressed interest in working in Manitoba.
- After that, pre-screened workers' applications are sent to you for your consideration. You can select workers by travelling to Iceland to interview them or by completing the hiring process from Canada.
Note: You must obtain a Certificate of Registration from Manitoba's Employment Standards Division and a positive Labour Market Opinion through Service Canada to be eligible to recruit workers internationally. The workers you select must obtain a work permit from Citizenship and Immigration Canada before they are legally entitled in work in Canada. A representative of Manitoba Labour and Immigration can assist you through the steps of foreign worker recruitment.

Winnipeg Construction Associations annual Spring Barbecue once again ushered in warmer temperatures on June 3, 2009. The event attracted record numbers – over 400 attendees – to WCA’s parking lot for good food hot off the grill, sounds of summer by steel pan musician Clyde Heerah and socializing with friends and colleagues in the construction industry.
Thank you to the WCA Entertainment Committee, as well as WCA staff for putting on a fabulous event.
Integrated Province-wide Wage Schedule in Effect
Effective June 1, 2009, all industrial, commercial and institutional (ICI) projects will follow the same province-wide minimum wage schedule. This eliminates the need for a rural wage schedule. No matter where a structure is built in Manitoba, the same wage schedule will apply.
CIWA Integrated Wage Rate Booklets for both the Manitoba Industrial, Commercial and Institutional Construction Sector and Manitoba's Heavy Construction Sector are available at the Winnipeg Construction Association. To obtain the new booklets, please contact Holly Waytiuk at holly@winnipegconstruction.ca or stop by WCA.
